...on the rear of the Rover. I totally could have gotten another year or two out of them, right?

In all seriousness, i noticed the grinding and immediately changed the pads and the rotor, which was also toast . The pad was stuck to the rotor and was probably just slowing the car down from the screws.

On the other side, i couldn’t get the rotor to pop free of the barking brake assembly. The adjustment knurle is totally seized; I could get the rotor to wobble and come halfway off but no further. I didn’t want to force it with a puller for fear of destroying the parking brake assembly. Any thoughts, other than to find someone with bigger and badder tools?

When in doubt, call in the professionals. What started as a simple brake drum replacement on my F ocus, lasted two days and resulted in me paying $650 for two replacement drums, spindle, an ABS sensor and the labor to put it all together. All because, apparently, O’Reilly’s gave me the wrong brake drums to begin with.

O’Reilly’s has given me an oil filter that was too small to fit. I no longer trust them to look up parts.

I never buy stuff from chain shops. I exclusively buy stuff from RockAuto or other retailers, spec’ing it myself. That way, if there’s a screw up, I can be sure it was my fault.

Well, if I go to the auto parts store, and request a brake drum for my car, and it is the correct part number for my car, I’m usually fairly certain it will fit. This time, for whatever reason, they didn’t. Rock Auto could just as easily shipped a rear drum that looked OK, but didn’t fit properly. I should just learn not to mess with drum brakes in general. I’ve never been able to sort them out properly.

Fair. I haven’t had any part number mixups from RockAuto yet, but I’ve only dealt with them about 10 times. I usually have a rough time at Autozone and AAP, though, since my car isn’t a Big 3 vehicle.
